Ports of Auckland Barges H6 and H8

When one of New Zealand’s largest port companies, Ports of Auckland, recently needed minor structural repairs for two of the company’s much-used barges so they could have their annual survey completed, they sailed a short way up the coast to the safe waters of Whangarei Harbour where leading maritime engineering experts Ship Repair are based.

The H6 barge and her sister vessel H8 are 39m long hopper barges of 450 cubic metre capacity.

Once those minor structural repairs had been taken care of, Ship Repair gave the barges a full sandblast and paint of both entire vessels, getting them back to looking good as new once more.

Nordmeer

When the Nordmeer needed structural repairs and a full hull valve survey in early 2018, the ideal place to go for her ship maintenance was Ship Repair, located on Port Road in Whangarei Harbour.

The Nordmeer had been out of service and tied along main 1 wharf for the last eight years.

Ship Repair has amongst its facilities a commercial wharf complete with crane, engineering workshops and a 2000 tonne capacity, so hauling theNordmeer onto the slipway was easily achieved.

Ship Repair carried out a full shaft and rudder survey, a full hull valve survey as well as some structural repairs. The team then cut an access hole into the starboard side and two new generators were lifted into position and installed.

A 90% strip of the underwater hull paint was carried out. The underwater hull paint was then replaced with a new paint system and the blue paint of the topsides was given a full coat tidy up.

Bilyara trawler

When the owners of the 20-metre trawler Bilyara needed new stabiliser wings, they brought the vessel to Ship Repair, one of the country’s most trusted names in marine repair. Stability is essential for the Bilyara, a vessel which is almost always hard at work trawling for scampi in the turbulent Southern Ocean. Smooth sailing is important not only for the crew aboard the trawler, but for the shareholders, customers and everybody else depending on the ship collecting its haul in a timely manner.

Fixing on new state of the art wings to dampen the roll of the vessel involved the experts at Ship Repair cutting slot boxes out of the hull plates. The new stabiliser wings were placed on the port and starboard sides of the Bilyara. We utilised the expertise of our marine fabrication and heavy engineering experts, supplying quality work with trusty welding at our reliable slipway in the calm waters of Whangarei Harbour. After this, we carried out a general touch-up and tidy of the hull and deck paint systems then sent the Bilyara back out to sea with confidence.

Thanks must go out to Derek and the team from Industrial Rebuilds for their assistance throughout the project.

Ocean Fresh

When ship owners are in need of refitting, marine engineering, a reliable paint job or hull repair, Ship Repair in Whangarei Harbour is always one of the first names that comes to mind.

For the New owners of the Vessel Ocean Fresh, deciding who to trust to get the vessel primed for its challenging workload was easy. One of the first stages of the refurbishment was fabricating a new aft deck crane then installing this sturdy piece of machinery. Next came cropping and replacement of the deck plating throughout the aft deck area. After this, we carried out a modification to the rudder. This allowed a more efficient turning circle, with better steerage and improved headway – major factors with a vessel as long as the Ocean Fresh. The rudder modification is already saving the vessel’s operators time, money and hassle.

The next stage was to cut off the old transducer housings, then to manufacture and install new housings and transducers. By this time, the Ocean Fresh was ready to have the shaft assembly surveyed and modified. We machined a new propeller hub push rod section, fabricated two new generator beds and installed these in the vessel. The final pieces of work before we proudly sent the Ocean Fresh on her way were a full hull valve survey as well as a general tidy up of the topsides and underwater paint work.

Heron Construction’s WH761 Split Hopper Barge

Arriving at our Port Road premises in Whangarei recently was the Split Hopper Barge WH761.

She is non-propelled and measures just under 60 metres. We began improving the WH761 by working on the main decks, where we carried out welding repairs. Some general fabricating followed this. Four sets of very large mooring bollards needed to be replaced, and then we fabricated some new boarding steps. These were installed on both sides of the barge. A little machinery house had to then be removed.

After this we took care of a paint job as well as a general tidy up. Stripping the underwater paint also needed to be done. Following this, the entire barge was painted.

We sent the barge back out to sea to continue its work, shifting seabed material which has been dredged using its mighty 750m3 vessel open hold.
