Recent Ship Repair Projects

Acheron III

Our team of qualified surveyors took care of the Acheron III recently. The Acheron III is a 24m tug built in 2009. Our basic mid-term surveys are very thorough and professional and essential for crew and owners to have confidence in the vessel – not to mention insurers.

On the Acheron III we did a detailed examination of her sea valves, did a bump test on the shaft and rudders, then there was the paint to clean up. We carried out a blast and repaint of her underwater sides and topside and sent the Acheron back out to sea, the very definition of ship shape.

Kapua

We did a full term survey of the Kapua recently. The Kapua is a 44m dredger and former ferry based in Auckland. She is primarily used for dredging sand and sediment or carrying aggregate to her owners’ depot, travelling across the Hauraki Gulf to Whangarei and back.

Our maritime surveys – always performed by qualified surveyors, meeting top notch standards – cover inspection of the structure of the vessel, the machinery on board, as well as its equipment (such as navigational), as well as inspecting the general condition of the boat or ship.

On the Kapua, following a thorough survey, we put in all new shaft bearings from Thordon XL and added new stainless liners on three shafts. We conducted a valve survey, did small repairs on hull plates, cut out the internal hopper sides and welded in 75 metres of new 20mm steel plate. We carried out a blast and repaint of her underwater sides and topside and sent the Kapua away strong and reliable.

San Aramand

One of Ship Repair’s recent successes was a complete conversion of the San Aramand, a 20m prawn trawler which – following fire damage – needed to be inspected, entirely converted then painted for its new workload as a scampi trawler with Sanford seafood company.

The work included putting in a complete new interior, top to bottom, all new hydraulic fishing package including winches, and setting up an all-new structural towing frame and main gantry frame for fishing. We also installed a new generator, replenished the refrigeration, carried out new stabiliser fabrication and installation then provided a complete new paint job in the colours of the Sanford fleet, putting the San Aramand back to sea ready to perform outstandingly well in her industry.

Spirit of New Zealand

When the Spirit was brought to Ship Repair, an intermediate Maritime Safety Authority marine survey was carried out.

A new fuel tank filler was fitted, breather pipe systems were fabricated and modifications were then made to the bulwarks.

New Zealand's most experienced ship refit and repair specialists.

Hello Henk, I think we met once or twice along the way whilst Itasca was in your Shipyard. I would like to say what a successful Yard period it turned out to be for the Engineering Dept onboard. With Gary Mitchell leading the fitters they managed to service in excess of 60 assorted valves. The determination of the workshop crew, Gary Mitchell, Raymond, Keith, Dave, Gary, Ross, Dennis, Penny, Graham Glass, Brian, alan, and of course Mr Cheung I was most impressed with from the start. Their sheer determination and hardwork is much appreciated by myself, a Chief Engineer of long standing. This is a BIG THANK YOU to each and every one of them including project Manager Peter who gave a lot of time and effort to the planning and successful completion of the project. Kindest Regards, Bob Whelan. I.Eng. MIET. Chief Engineer MY Itasca.

Deep Water Port

Located in the calm, sheltered waters of Whangarei Harbour – we are one of only four deep water ports in New Zealand. We have a large slipway for vessels up to 1800 tonne which often handles two ships at once, as well as a second 40 tonne slipway for smaller vessels.

Sheltered Harbour

Facilities onsite include showers & toilets for crew, a fully equipped office with internet access, and easy access to Whangarei CBD. We can arrange rental vehicles, accommodation, sort out crew visas and permits and look after you during your time ashore.

Full Project Management

As well as our team of specialist marine fabricators, heavy engineers, fitters and electricians, we work with our trusted specialist tradespeople and suppliers, or yours, to complete your ship repair project on time and within budget.
