Western Ranger

Recently we’ve carried out a mid-life refit on the Western Ranger, which is a 410 tonne tuna fishing vessel, giving the owners confidence in their vessel for another 15 years. Ship Repair NZ Ltd offers a full turnkey service on any ship, meaning owners are confident in leaving their vessel with us for a full turnkey service from the most minor renovations to complicated jobs involving complex machinery.

The Western Ranger re-fit began with stripping apart the brine alley and service alley. We carried out major structural repairs to the hull and plating. We replaced a lot of the Western Ranger’s pipework with new fabricated pipes and PVC pipes. We pulled out the driveline system, which involved taking out three different drive shafts and manufacturing two new intermediate shafts to put back in.

We fully sandblasted the Western Ranger’s tunnel area and applied a 3 coat paint system.

The systems including the bilge, brine, fuel, fresh water and the drive line were reinstated. This involved a full realignment of the drive line and shaft bearings.

For the next part of this ship refit we serviced the booms and rigging equipment, stripped and serviced the winches, repaired the mast down to all three booms, and then overhauled the purse seine winch.

Last but not least, we gave the Western Ranger a full vessel paint job from head to toe. One of the pleasures the Ship Repair team enjoys is seeing vessels come back to us every couple of years and adding improvements and refits, so we look forward to putting a new main engine in the Western Ranger in 2018.

Hello Henk, I think we met once or twice along the way whilst Itasca was in your Shipyard. I would like to say what a successful Yard period it turned out to be for the Engineering Dept onboard. With Gary Mitchell leading the fitters they managed to service in excess of 60 assorted valves. The determination of the workshop crew, Gary Mitchell, Raymond, Keith, Dave, Gary, Ross, Dennis, Penny, Graham Glass, Brian, alan, and of course Mr Cheung I was most impressed with from the start. Their sheer determination and hardwork is much appreciated by myself, a Chief Engineer of long standing. This is a BIG THANK YOU to each and every one of them including project Manager Peter who gave a lot of time and effort to the planning and successful completion of the project. Kindest Regards, Bob Whelan. I.Eng. MIET. Chief Engineer MY Itasca.

Deep Water Port

Located in the calm, sheltered waters of Whangarei Harbour – we are one of only four deep water ports in New Zealand. We have a large slipway for vessels up to 1800 tonne which often handles two ships at once, as well as a second 40 tonne slipway for smaller vessels.

Sheltered Harbour

Facilities onsite include showers & toilets for crew, a fully equipped office with internet access, and easy access to Whangarei CBD. We can arrange rental vehicles, accommodation, sort out crew visas and permits and look after you during your time ashore.

Full Project Management

As well as our team of specialist marine fabricators, heavy engineers, fitters and electricians, we work with our trusted specialist tradespeople and suppliers, or yours, to complete your ship repair project on time and within budget.
