Fishing Vessel Western Ranger – Purse Winch Refurbishment

While we had the Western Ranger up on the hard in mid-2018, we carried out a complete refurbishment of the purse winch, including the rebuilding and upgrade of the main winch drum, and upgrading the shaft. We rebuilt the bearing housing as well as fully sandblasting and recoating it. When the upgraded winch was sea-trialled, it netted 130 tonnes of fish between the ship and her new 8m skiff which we also constructed. The Western Ranger’s upgraded purse winch can be confidently operated for many more thousand tonnes of catch.

Deep Water Port

Located in the calm, sheltered waters of Whangarei Harbour – we are one of only four deep water ports in New Zealand. We have a large slipway for vessels up to 1800 tonne which often handles two ships at once, as well as a second 40 tonne slipway for smaller vessels.

Facilities onsite include showers & toilets for crew, a fully equipped office with internet access, and easy access to Whangarei CBD. We can arrange rental vehicles, accommodation, sort out crew visas and permits and look after you during your time ashore.
